Barn board is taking off as a design trend

Weathered and abandoned, barn board has become the hottest thing in interior design.

They’ve got knots and holes. There are pieces missing and they’ve been sitting outside for so long, they’ve gone grey. But barn boards — yes, those weathered, textured and antique boards torn off decrepit barns — are the hottest trend in interior design.

From bedrooms to outdoor kitchens, fireplaces to the upstairs room at Fratelli’s new Kanata location, the natural warmth and rustic look of barn board is proving irresistible to interior designers such as Jennifer McGahan, who has used it in several projects and is currently installing it around her own fireplace.

“I just love the warmth it provides,” she says. “When you place something as rustic as barn board in a modern space, it really warms up the room and gives you a nice contrast with the modern, clean lines and the smooth surfaces.”
